Students wishing to enroll in applied voice lessons should plan to audition. Students wishing to pursue a degree in music with voice as their primary emphasis may prepare using the listed items below. These requirements are suggestions. You may choose to perform any pieces/scales that you feel demonstrates your best musical ability, and you will be placed in the appropriate level of applied study.
In a voice audition, we recommend a performance of three works as a placement assessment:
- An English language art song or aria written after 1900.
- A foreign language art song or aria.
- One additional art song or aria of your choice, or a musical theatre/jazz selection of your choice.
If you have a limited repertoire of vocal literature, two contrasting works of any genres will be acceptable. Works do not have to be memorized, though performance from memory is highly preferred. An accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music in your key to the audition.
