

Dr. Steven J. Triezenberg began his tenure as Interim President of Grand Rapids Community College on May 12, 2025. A respected leader in higher education, scientific research and academic administration, Dr. Triezenberg brings more than 30 years of experience to the role during a pivotal time in the college’s history.
Prior to joining GRCC, Dr. Triezenberg served as President and founding Dean of the Van Andel Institute Graduate School where he was instrumental in developing its graduate education programs. He retired from that position in June 2023 after a distinguished tenure marked by innovation, academic excellence and a commitment to student success. From 2009 to 2015, he also led the Van Andel Education Institute as its Director.
Dr. Triezenberg earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and education from Calvin College (now Calvin University), and his Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology from the University of Michigan. He conducted postdoctoral research at the Carnegie Institution of Washington before joining Michigan State University’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology where he served as a faculty member and mentor for nearly two decades.
Dr. Triezenberg remains active in higher education as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and was recognized in 2012 with an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Central Michigan University.
