Behavioral Intervention Team

The Behavioral Intervention Team is designed to help detect early indicators of the potential for disruptive conduct, self-harm, and the risk of violence to others. The team intakes and assesses information, takes action when necessary and tracks details about behavior concerns noted on campus.

Our focus is care and concern for students, faculty, and staff members who may be in distress. We coordinate resources and implement a centralized response, with the goals of providing assistance to the individual and keeping our community healthy and safe.

If your concern involves an immediate safety risk to self or others, call campus police at (616) 234-4911 or 911 immediately. 

When to make a referral to the Behavioral Intervention Team:

Does something seem off? Trust your instinct. There's no wrong referral. If you're unsure, make a referral. 

  • Significant change in appearance, mood and/or social functioning.
  • A sense that someone is struggling or that something is wrong.
  • Behavior that creates a disruptive or hostile environment.
  • Actions that potentially endanger the safety of any member of the GRCC or broader community.
  • Behavior that impacts one's ability to function appropriately and successfully on campus.

These behaviors, especially when more than one are present, may be signs that a student is in distress.

Examples could include, but are not limited to:

  • Sudden change in demeanor or attitude.
  • Student states intent to harm self.
  • Student states intent to harm others.
  • Student demonstrates erratic behaviors that significantly disrupt the learning/work environment.
  • Displaced anger.
  • Discussion, writing or drawings of weapon/bomb collection, use, etc.

To make a BIT referral

If you are a GRCC Faculty or Staff member, please submit a referral via Navigate by following these instructions: 

  • Go to MyGRCC and log in with your GRCC user ID and password.
  • Click on the "Navigate Staff" tile. 
  • Click the "Issue an Alert" link, located at the top of the right margin.
  • Find the student of concern by searching with their name or ID number. 
  • Select the "BIT/Conduct/TitleIX" alert type.
  • Add relevant information and click Submit.

Concerns are reviewed during normal business hours. If your concern involves an immediate safety risk to self or others, call GRCC Police at (616) 234-4911 or 911 immediately.
