Guitar Studies

The following are guidelines for work to be accomplished during each semester of guitar study. In addition to the guidelines below students will be expected to perform in interp, participate in ensembles and Jazz Guitar I and Jazz Guitar II.  Applied Jazz Guitar study is also available in conjunction with classical guitar study.  All degrees are based on achieving each level in applied classical guitar.

MUS 153/161

Technical work on fundamentals of guitar playing: sitting position, hand positions and Alexander Technique. Develop music reading skills through use of sight reading materials and Solo Guitar Playing, Book I, Third Edition by Frederick M. Noad.

Two octave major and minor scales. Technical studies from Pumping Nylon, by Scott Tenant. Repertoire: Studies by Carulli, Carcassi, Giuliani and Sor.

Jury: Major and minor scales, and two or three memorized pieces. Including a study by Sor or Carcassi.

MUS 162

Continued refinement of technique: tone production, technical studies, slurs, arpeggios and two and three octave major and minor scales. Repertoire: Studies by Carcassi and Sor; Pieces from grades four and five of the Royal Conservatory of Music Studies and Repertoire Books, published by The Frederick Harris Music Co.

Jury: Full faculty jury. Two and three octave major and melodic minor scales, one study by Sor, one study by Carcassi (or equivalent) and one piece of choice, all memorized.

MUS 261

Continued refinement of technique and musicianship. Two and three octave major and melodic minor scales. Arpeggios. Repertoire: Pieces from grades five and six of the Royal Conservatory of Music Studies and Repertoire books.

Jury: Scales and arpeggios. Two or three memorized pieces.

MUS 262

Continued refinement of technique and musicianship. Two and three octave major and melodic and harmonic minor scales. Arpeggios. Repertoire: Pieces from grades six and seven of the Royal Conservatory of Music Studies and Repertoire books.

Jury: Scales and arpeggios. Two or three memorized pieces.
