The Office of Diversity Equity & Inclusion is looking for some amazing GRCC Staff and Faculty to be apart of the ALAS Affinity Group.

What is ALAS?

Alas in the Spanish language means wings. The ALAS Program at Grand Rapids Community College is designed to help students soar to new heights of academic excellence. Participants will be equipped for success through academic skills development, access to resources, community building, and self-discovery.

Expectations:

  • Attend ALAS planning meeting(s)
  • Attend ALAS events when schedule permits
  • Host/Facilitate ALAS program or workshop
  • Serve as a mentor
  • Committed to creating a safe space to cultivate belonging

Engagement Opportunities:

ALAS participants will be invited to engage in various skill and knowledge building opportunities throughout the semester. Access to other engagement and support initiatives may include:

  • Academic Support- ALAS will refer students to campus resources such as academic advising, financial aid, and tutoring services. The program will also connect students to community partners that can assist with various personal needs that impact academic success.
  • Emotional Intelligence and Personal Growth- ALAS participants will be encouraged to attend local and regional student leadership conferences, local networking events, and Lunch and Learn workshops powered by Student Engagement Programs, and initiative of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Career Exploration and Professional Development- As an advocate for cultivating a holistic student experience, ALAS will connect students to a professional mentor. Through this exchange, students will have the opportunity to learn about internships, shadow professionals in a desired field of study, and attend campus tours at four-year colleges and universities.
  • Social and Recreational Activities- Student engagement is a critical component of ALAS programming. Students will be encouraged to develop and participate in enriching cultural events that affirm and celebrate their identity and the identity and culture of other communities.

Mentorship: ALAS participants will be matched with professional/ returning students who will serve as a mentor for support guidance and help offer assistance and resources that aid in navigating college. Student-centered and student-focused mentorship programs have shown great success in encouraging academic success, increasing student engagement, and cultivating a sense of belonging.
