Americans with Disabilities Act Student Complaint Procedure

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) has adopted an internal grievance procedure providing for prompt and equitable resolution of complaints alleging violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (29 U.S.Co 794). Section 504 states, in part, that "no otherwise qualified individual with a disability...shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

Review GRCC Policy 3.2 (Non-Discrimination on Basis of Disability) to find next steps in grievance related to:

  • Complaint regarding an accommodation decision
  • Complaint against another student
  • Complaint regarding implementation of an accommodation
  • Complaint regarding other forms of disability-related discrimination by college employee

For any complaints related to access and accommodation, a student is invited to discuss their concerns directly with individual(s) involved and include their assigned DSS counselor/advisor as appropriate.  If more resolution is needed, a student can then seek support from the DSS Program Director. Be sure to review the rights and responsibilities area of the DSS website for more details about how GRCC seeks to respond to equal access as defined and protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
