Notice: Mascot Submission Period Closed

Thank you to everyone who shared their creative ideas during the first round of our mascot search!

The submission period is now closed. Be sure to check back this fall for the next round of voting as we move one step closer to selecting GRCC’s new mascot!

Grand Rapids Community College is excited to launch a search for a new Raider mascot that embodies the spirit, values and identity of our college.

While the name “Raider” will remain, the visual and symbolic representation of the mascot will be an important part of the college’s branding and culture. We invite all students, employees, alumni, donors and retirees to participate in this process by submitting a mascot idea!

What is a Raider?

The original GRCC mascot, the Raider Raccoon, made its debut as an Indiana Jones-inspired character but was retired in the 2010s. Since then, various mascot ideas have been considered, including a lion, inspired by the iconic lion fountain on campus.

However, the lion has never officially been adopted as the GRCC mascot.

A Raider is:

  • Dedicated. GRCC Raiders are focused on their academic and personal goals, showing commitment to learning and growth.
  • Resilient. GRCC Raiders are persistent and adaptable, persevering through challenges and making the most of every opportunity.
  • Inclusive. GRCC Raiders celebrate and value differences, working together to create a supportive and respectful environment for all.

We need your help!

This is your chance to help shape the future of GRCC by submitting your ideas for a new Raider mascot. This is the first phase of the mascot search, and we’re asking for text-based submissions only at this time — no designs are needed.

Once ideas are gathered, they’ll be reviewed to identify key themes and ideas which will serve as the foundation for the next steps where professional designers will bring the most popular concepts to life. The final mascot will be selected based on feedback from the GRCC campus community.

Submission guidelines

  • The mascot should embody the GRCC spirit, representing values of perseverance, academic excellence, inclusivity and community engagement.
  • The Raider name should be maintained, but submissions can interpret “Raider” creatively. It could draw from historical, cultural or modern representations provided it aligns with GRCC’s mission.
  • It should appeal to students, staff and alumni while being approachable and friendly.
  • Only one submission per person allowed.
  • Suggestions must not be copyrighted.
  • Suggestions to revive the raccoon will not be considered.
  • All submissions will be reviewed by a committee composed of GRCC staff.

The submission form closed April 18 at 5 p.m.
