Coronavirus/COVID-19 FAQs

Commonly asked COVID questions.

What is the coronavirus/COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a newly identified type of coronavirus that causes flu-like illness. The virus has been documented in multiple countries since it was first identified in December 2019, in the city of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), human coronaviruses are common throughout the world, but COVID-19 is a public health concern because much is still unknown about it.

Symptoms & Risk Assessment

The CDC considers all new viruses to be a public health concern, but the immediate health risk to the general US public remains low at this time.

Symptoms

COVID-19 causes flu-like symptoms which include:

  • Fever.
  • Cough.
  • Shortness of breath.

Risk of Transmission

The virus is confirmed to spread person-to-person, although it’s unclear exactly how it is transmitted and how easily the virus spreads between people. The latest updates on risk assessment are available on the CDC's Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) website.

Prevention

  • Wash your hands often, with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.
    • Use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol when you're unable to wash with soap.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
    • Immediately discard into trash.
  • Avoid people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect "high-touch" objects and surfaces.

What should I do if I have symptoms of COVID-19?

Stay home to avoid potentially spreading the illness to others.

Call ahead to your healthcare provider if you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing.

Be sure to tell the person you speak to if you have had contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or if you live in or have recently traveled to an area with ongoing spread.

If necessary, your healthcare provider will work with your public health department and CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19.

Spectrum Health is offering free COVID-19 virtual screenings.
