Who is required to take the ESL test?

If English is not your primary language and you seek to enhance your proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communication in English, this assessment is tailored to your needs. You must also meet with an academic advisor in order to schedule English as a Second Language (ESL) courses after you complete the ESL Placement test.

Before you can take the ESL assessment, please ensure that you have completed an online application. This step is crucial to help us better understand your language needs and provide you with the appropriate resources.

Taking the ESL Placement Test

The ESL or Levels of English Proficiency (LOEP) Test consists of four components.

  1. Reading skills: You will read passages of 50-90 words and answer questions about the reading.
  2. Online Essay: You will have 40 minutes to write an essay on a topic provided to you.
  3. Language Use: This test measure’s your understanding of English vocabulary.
  4. Listening: This test measures the ability to listen to and understand one or more people speaking in English.

Testing is available on main campus Monday – Thursday 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and Friday, 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on a walk-in basis. Lakeshore testing is available by appointment only.
