Requirements by program type
After admission into a health plan code the following prerequisite requirements need to be met to be placed on a program waiting list.
Associate Degree Nursing
- High school graduate with a GPA of at least 2.5 (or GED equivalent) or a college GPA of at least 2.0 for students with 12 or more college credits.
- Chemistry with Lab (1 year in high school with C or higher, or college equivalent) GRCC: CHM 110 or higher.
- Biology (1 year in high school with C or higher, or college equivalent) GRCC: BI 101 or any BI class with lab.
- All students need to demonstrate competency in math within the last five years to be eligible. Sufficient ALEKS PPL test scores can satisfy this requirement. Students with insufficient test scores must complete MA 098 (or above) with a grade of C or higher. Contact the Health Admissions Department for details at healthprograms@grcc.edu or (616) 234-4348.
- HESI Exam (scored subtests: math, reading comprehension, vocabulary & general knowledge, grammar). There is a fee for this exam. Passing score on each subtest must be 75% or higher. For more info: http://www.grcc.edu/nursingprograms/healtheducationsystemsinchesiexam
- Students must: Conduct their own ICHAT online, print off the results and bring that evidence, along with the Preliminary Background Check form, to GRCC Police or Health Admissions or email both the results and completed form to healthprograms@grcc.edu. OR bring the Preliminary Background Check Form, with $10, to GRCC Police or Health Admissions.
- Drug Screen: Must have a negative 7-panel urine drug screen. May be able to use a drug screen done within the past 12 months. Results should be submitted to the Health Admissions Office, 600 College Park Plaza or email to healthprograms@grcc.edu.
- Foundational Courses and Academic Probation/Suspension (effective fall 2015)
- In order to be eligible for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) or Practical Nursing program, students must have successfully completed any required AFP courses with a grade of at least C and be in good academic standing.
- Any student placed on Academic Suspension while on the waitlist or while enrolled in either nursing program will be withdrawn. Students wishing to pursue nursing after this may re-apply after following GRCC’s academic suspension policy and returning to good academic standing.
- Students who wish to apply to the ADN program with Advanced Standing must possess a current, unencumbered, practical nursing license, and 2000 hours of work experience as an LPN verified with the Confirmation of Work Experience form. (beginning fall, 2016).
Practical Nursing Certificate
- High school graduate with a GPA of at least 2.0 (or GED equivalent) or a College GPA of at least 2.0 for students with 12 or more college credits.
- As of Fall 2017, All students need to demonstrate competency in math within the last five years to be eligible. Sufficient ALEKS PPL test scores can satisfy this requirement. Dental Assisting Certificate or Associate Degree
- Submit a copy of your high school transcripts or GED.
- Have a high school or college GPA of at least 2.3.
- Math competency must be demonstrated within the last five years through any one of the following ways:
- Math Placement Test (ALEKS) with a score of 30 or higher or
- Completion of MA 098 or higher with a grade of C or higher.
- Reading and writing requirement competency must be demonstrated through any one of the following ways:
- EN 101 with a grade of C or higher (no time limit) or
- Score of 26+ on ACT or 400+ on SAT within the last five years or
- Accuplacer placement test combined scores of 249+ on the reading portion and 4+ on the written portion within the last five years.
- Pass a Preliminary Background Check.

Dental Hygiene Associate Degree
- Submit a copy of your high school transcripts or GED
- Have a high school or college GPA of at least 2.3.
- Math competency must be demonstrated within the last five years through any one of the following ways:
- Math Placement Test (ALEKS) with a score of 30 or higher or
- Completion of MA 098 or higher with a grade of C or higher.
- Reading and writing requirement competency must be demonstrated through any one of the following ways:
- EN 101 with a grade of C or higher (no time limit) or
- Score of 26+ on ACT or 400+ on SAT within the last five years or
- Accuplacer placement test combined scores of 249+ on the reading portion and 4+ on the written portion within the last five years.
- Have completed the following 4 pre-dental hygiene science courses with a C or higher within two attempts (a withdrawal is considered an attempt):
- BI121: Human Anatomy & Physiology 1
- BI122: Human Anatomy & Physiology 2
- BI127: Microbiology
- CHM210: Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry
- Pass a Preliminary Background Check.
- Submit a signed copy of the Pre-Dental Hygiene Progression Policy.
Occupational Therapy Assistant Associate Degree

High school graduate with a GPA of at least 2.5 (or GED equivalent) or a college GPA of at least 2.5 for students with 12 or more college credits

Must demonstrate math, reading and writing competency all must be within the last five years. Dependent on demonstrated competencies, a reduce timeframe may apply (for specific details/scores visit the Occupation Therapy website for more information).
- Pass a preliminary criminal background check .
- Successful completion of Bl 121 and Bl 122 within two attempts with a grade of C or Higher. If it has been more than five years since the most recent attempt, one additional opportunity will be allowed. Successful completion of OT 102 with a grade of C or Higher within 2 attempts. A withdrawal is consider an attempt for each of these courses.

Radiologic Technology Associate Degree
- Be a high school graduate or have passed the high school equivalency GED (General Educational Development) Test.
- Have a high school GPA of at least 2.0.
- Must demonstrate math, reading and writing competency all must be within the last five years. Dependent on demonstrated competencies, a reduce timeframe may apply (for specific details/scores visit the Radiologic Technology Associate Degree Admission Criteria).
- Complete Bl 121 and Bl 122 with a c or Higher within two attempts. This includes WD and DR attempts.
- Complete and pass a 7-panel drug screen.
- Complete criminal background check process. Students will not be allowed to enter the program until cleared by GRCC police.
Students have the option to take RT 100 prior to starting the Radiologic Technology Program, beginning Summer 2021.
