Jonathan Marshall

A Michigan-born classical guitarist and composer, Jonathan Marshall is the Director of Guitar Studies - Assistant Professor at Grand Rapids Community College. He also directs the GRCC International Guitar Series and the GRCC Student and Community Guitar Ensembles.

Jonathan regularly performs as a soloist, with guitarist Brian Morris in the Grand Rapids Guitar Duo, and as a member of the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet. He has composed numerous solo and chamber works for classical guitar, published through Guitar Chamber Music Press. In addition to his performing and teaching career, he owns and operates Jonathan Marshall Guitars, an online concert classical guitar dealership.

He studied under guitarist George Yeatman, as well as guitarist and vocalist Brian Morris at Grand Rapids Community College, Carlos De La Barrera at Grand Valley State University, and completed his Master’s degree at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, under Professor Clare Callahan. Jonathan has participated in master classes with Manuel Barrueco, Denis Azabagic, Ana Vidovic, and Oscar Ghiglia. He was awarded second place in the 2007 Columbus, Ohio College Guitar Competition, and recorded a CD in 2006 titled Modern Classical Guitar.

Outside of music, Jonathan metal detects the beaches of West Michigan, practices magic tricks, repairs guitars, walks, and is a DIY enthusiast. Most importantly, he is a devoted husband and father.
