Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/ADHD:
- You may notice students having difficulty with:
- Inability to sustain attention on tasks
- Lack of close attention to details especially related to deadlines or assignments
- Distractibility, not listening when spoken directly to
- Time management and organizational skills
- Being prepared for class, keeping appointments, arriving on time
- Reading comprehension
- Difficulty with math operations and calculations
- Note taking
- Poor handwriting
- Blurting out answers or interrupting others
- Considerations for Instruction:
- ADHD often found with another disorder (ie. anxiety, OCD, Autism, or learning disabilities
- Use structure and consistency each class period or week
- Provide students with organizational frameworks for students to use
- Post reminders of deadlines as they approach on Blackboard
- Make a point of verbalizing deadlines even if they aren’t further discussed in class
- Allow students to choose their own seat location
- Use varied instructional methods (visual outline, group activity, web based assignment, etc.)
- Keep instructions clear, brief, and provide in writing as well
- Accommodations may include, but would not be limited to:
- Reduced distraction testing environment
- Additional time for tests
- Copies of classroom notes or instructors notes
- Use of Smart Pen or Digital Recorder to record lectures
- Electronic textbooks or classroom materials that can be used with Text to Speech software
