Kent Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates 50 years of musical excellence

Kent Philharmonic Orchestra 50th Anniversary Est 1975

Oct. 21, 2024

The Kent Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to announce a landmark celebration marking its 50th anniversary. This momentous occasion will culminate in a spectacular Golden Jubilee concert on December 6 in the Royce Auditorium at St. Cecilia Music Center, showcasing the rich history and vibrant future of this cherished community institution.

Since its inception, the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra has been dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape of our community through exceptional performances, educational initiatives, and outreach programs. Over the past five decades, the orchestra has brought together talented musicians from diverse backgrounds, fostering a love for music in audiences of all ages.

Director of the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra and GRCC faculty member Dr. Libor Ondras grew up surrounded by music in Czechoslovakia. Having studied in Moscow and Prague, Dr. Ondras has always been passionate about learning and focuses his courses on creating a culture of inclusion for all students.

"We are incredibly proud to celebrate 50 years of music and community," said Dr. Ondras. "This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our musicians, staff and supporters who have made the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra a vital part of our community. We look forward to celebrating our past while embracing the future of orchestral music in Grand Rapids."

Aleta Wells has been Principal Second Violin since the beginning of the Kent Philharmonic. It was her idea to start a community orchestra while attending  what was then Grand Rapids Junior College. She pitched the idea to Douglas Scripps, the music director at GRJC at the time and the idea came to life.  A GRJC alum, Wells went on to study music and art history at the University of Michigan. She currently plays in the first violin section of the orchestra.

“My career led me in a different direction as an executive in the business world, “remarked Wells. “However I still wanted the opportunity to play my violin with others who love music. I am extremely thankful the KPO has provided that opportunity for the last 50 years!”

The orchestra kicks off their 50th season with a performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony along with The Composer is Dead by Lemony Snicket and Nathanial Stookey on Oct. 25th. The Golden Jubilee Concert will be Dec. 6 and will feature the Golden Jubilee Overture World Premiere along with a performance of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 and Christus, op. 97.

All are invited to join in this celebration of music, collaboration and creativity. Tickets for all concerts are available on the website at kentphilgr.org.
