Parents are normally the ones who encourage their children to attend college. And while Linda instilled that goal in her three sons, they reciprocated by encouraging her to return to school and finish her degree. Thanks to their support and the Michigan Reconnect program, Linda is graduating in April with an associate of liberal arts degree in pre-anthropology.
After having retired from the US Postal Service, Linda now seeks a career that will allow her to help others. She will attend the University of Michigan and is leaning toward linguistic anthropology so she can help preserve her native Sicilian language.
In addition to overcoming the typical challenges of an adult student, Linda also battled ADHD en route to her degree. She and her sons have all been diagnosed with this condition. Linda credits GRCC disability services with helping her find accommodations so that she could achieve her goals. She started an ADHD support group at GRCC and plans to begin one at U of M as well.
“Three years ago, I could not have dreamed of completing this degree and attending U of M,” Linda admits. “I am so grateful for the support of my children and GRCC for helping me achieve this milestone.”
