Become a certified Rider Coach!
Grand Rapids Community College is looking for motorcycle enthusiasts who are passionate about safety.
If you ride your motorcycle with a safety mindset, we need you! GRCC has Rider Coach openings in Caledonia, Muskegon, Scottville, Big Rapids and Kalkaska.
To become a certified Rider Coach instructor, it is required that you attended in-depth Rider Coach training by The Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Additionally, there are several eligibility requirements.
Requirements include:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have passed the Basic Rider Course (BRC) within the past year.
- Have held a motorcycle endorsement (CY) for at least one year.
- Successfully complete a Rider Coach pre-course assignment.
- Pass a Michigan Department of State review of your driving record.
- Have a personal driving record with not more than six (6) points for moving violations during the 12 consecutive months applying for approval as a Rider Coach.
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Have a commitment from a current sponsor to hire you if you are accepted and successful.
- Candidates must be physically capable of standing on pavement in various weather conditions for extended periods of time. This includes rain, snow, direct sun and extreme heat/cold.
Successful completion of this training will result in a Rider Coach Certification through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The MSF is a nationally recognized program that has provided the curriculum followed by all motorcycle safety training providers in the State of Michigan.
This training is 64-88 hours in length. We are limited to 8 hours a day. You will learn to teach the MSF’s Basic Rider Course (BRC) using adult learning principles. The course will begin with a compressive pre-course assignment which MUST be completed prior to the first IN PERSON class meeting. The Rider Coach Trainers will lead instruction and assignments. Once the material has been covered, you will practice teaching in the classroom and on the range exercises with your fellow Rider Coach Candidates. At the end of the training, you will be student-teaching a BRC class with novice students.
If you meet the requirements and are selected as a candidate, there is a $75.00 course fee required to cover the registration fee and materials.
