Motorcycle Safety Training

Motorcycle Safety 2024

Registration for the 2024 season of motorcycle safety will become available in mid-March 2024. Registration is online only. Available seats will open progressively; meaning seats may be released at random. Check the website often, as seat availability will fluctuate daily until the classes are full.

Training will begin in May and end in early August 2024.

Basic Rider Course

Our Basic Rider Course Motorcycle Safety Training is recommended for all new riders or those with informal training.

This training is required to ride for persons who have failed the Secretary of State 3rd party road skills test twice, or if you're under 18.

Advance Rider Course

You must have completed and received endorsement for the Basic Rider course prior to taking the Advance Rider course.

Become a certified Rider Coach!

Grand Rapids Community College is looking for motorcycle enthusiasts who are passionate about safety. 

If you ride your motorcycle with a safety mindset, we need you! GRCC has Rider Coach openings in Caledonia, Muskegon, Scottville, Big Rapids and Kalkaska. 

To become a certified Rider Coach instructor, it is required that you attended in-depth Rider Coach training by The Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Additionally, there are several eligibility requirements.

Requirements include:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have passed the Basic Rider Course (BRC) within the past year. 
  • Have held a motorcycle endorsement (CY) for at least one year. 
  • Successfully complete a Rider Coach pre-course assignment. 
  • Pass a Michigan Department of State review of your driving record. 
  • Have a personal driving record with not more than six (6) points for moving violations during the 12 consecutive months applying for approval as a Rider Coach.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Have a commitment from a current sponsor to hire you if you are accepted and successful.
  • Candidates must be physically capable of standing on pavement in various weather conditions for extended periods of time. This includes rain, snow, direct sun and extreme heat/cold. 

Successful completion of this training will result in a Rider Coach Certification through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The MSF is a nationally recognized program that has provided the curriculum followed by all motorcycle safety training providers in the State of Michigan. 

This training is 64-88 hours in length. We are limited to 8 hours a day. You will learn to teach the MSF’s Basic Rider Course (BRC) using adult learning principles. The course will begin with a compressive pre-course assignment which MUST be completed prior to the first IN PERSON class meeting. The Rider Coach Trainers will lead instruction and assignments. Once the material has been covered, you will practice teaching in the classroom and on the range exercises with your fellow Rider Coach Candidates. At the end of the training, you will be student-teaching a BRC class with novice students. 

If you meet the requirements and are selected as a candidate, there is a $75.00 course fee required to cover the registration fee and materials.

Course requirements

  • A valid Michigan Driver's License or documentation of an approved Driver Education Course.
  • 18 hours of training on a provided motorcycle, including online, classroom and range time. Due to strict safety and size regulations, you'll need to train using our motorcycles.
    • Our inventory includes: Suzuki GZ250’s, Honda Rebel 250’s, Honda CB125s, Suzuki TU250W’s and Honda Nighthawk 250’s.
  • A Parental Waiver form if you are under 18. If your parent is unable to accompany you to class, you must have this form notarized.

Course fees

The course costs $50 per person and includes all of the necessary materials, including your course workbook, instruction, a loaner motorcycle and fuel!

Cancellation

We do not provide refunds and are unable to transfer the registration to another person or class. If you must cancel your registration, please call (616) 234-BIKE (2453).

A copy of the GRCC's Annual Security Report (ASR) is available for review. This report is required by the federal law and contains statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on-campus; in certain non-campus buildings or property owned and controlled by GRCC; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The ASR also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies concerning sexual misconduct, emergency procedures, and other matters.
