Wellness Programs

What exactly is the definition of wellness? We hear this word in the news, on billboards, in conversation and even here at work more than ever before. Interestingly, there is no universally-accepted definition of wellness, however, there is a set of common characteristics that is seen in most thoughtful attempts at a definition of wellness. There is generally seen a reference to a “state of well-being,” which is quite vague. Also frequently seen is a “state of acceptance or satisfaction with our present condition.”

The truth is, wellness is a tough word to define.  Charles B. Corbin of Arizona State University gives this definition of wellness: “Wellness is a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health in an individual as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of well-being.”

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more holistic existence.  Wellness is not something that happens to people, wellness is a state of being.  Here at Grand Rapids Community College we have a number of ways for you to "plug-in" to wellness.  You don't need to be a marathon runner or meditate for hours each day, but what's your next step to becoming a healthier person for yourself, your family, you students and our community?
