CLS 100: First Year Experience

CLS 100 is a two credit college course that prepares you to be successful in college and in life. This class is known as a "First-Year Experience" (FYE) course. Most colleges and universities have FYE courses and this course may transfer to your next college. CLS 100 is designed to assist you with the knowledge, skills and abilities you need to be successful in college and life.

Why take CLS 100?

Students who complete CLS 100 are more likely to continue in college to reach their goals. Research at GRCC has shown that students completing CLS 100 are much more likely to return for their second year than new students who did not take the course. College is an important investment in your future,

Beginning Winter 2014, new students to GRCC are required to enroll in CLS 100 their first semester if you:

  • Are a degree seeking student who has completed less than 12 transfer credits from another college or university. Or, you did not transfer credit into GRCC equivalent to PY 97 or CLS 100
  • Earned less than a 3.0 high school GPA
  • Did not test into PY 97

CLS 100 will help you to construct your personal roadmap to college success. College success leads to life success!

Have a CLH Hold?

If you have a CLS 100 hold, which will say CLH in your online student center, that means that you need to sign up for a section of CLS 100 for the next semester (or when you begin taking classes).  You will need assistance signing up for the CLS 100 class, so you have a couple options:

1.  You can contact us via email at counseling@grcc.edu. Please send us the following information from your GRCC email & enter “CLS 100 Registration” in the subject line of your email:

  • Your name
  • Your GRCC ID
  • The day and time of the CLS 100 class you want
  • The “class” number for the CLS 100 section (this will be a 4 digit number)

We will get this entered within 48 business hours of receiving your email.  If there are less than 5 seats left in the section you want, please send us a second choice so that we better assist you.

2. You can call us at 616-234-3900 and we can discuss your options.

3.  You can schedule an appointment or come see us during drop in hours at the Counseling & Career Center located on the third floor of the Student Center.  http://www.grcc.edu/counselingandcareercenter

If you think you have this hold in error, you should contact us as well so that we can work to resolve this with you.

If you feel that you have a strong understanding of the course content, you could attempt to take the “challenge exam”.  For information about the CLS 100 challenge exam go to http://www.grcc.edu/academictestingservices/challengeexams  and click on CLS 100.
