Job Training student learns by doing

Teresa Phillips knew what she wanted to do. As a Rockford High School student, she was sure she wasn’t interested in traditional college, but she also knew she would need more training to be successful. Fortunately, her counselor was determined to find the right program for her.

“I want to flip houses for a living,” Phillips said. “My counselor came to me with information on GRCC’s Job Training construction programs, and it was just what I was looking for.

“I took the Intro to Construction program first. John Doane, the instructor, took his time to make sure every student understood the topics. Most of the time, we were learning by doing. We didn’t spend too much time sitting in the classroom.”

After completing that program, Phillips wanted more, so she signed up for GRCC’s Residential Construction program.

“I had experience with the basics, but this program really gave me the big picture of residential building – just what I need to know!” she said.

Residential Construction and other GRCC Job Training programs begin every few months, so you don’t have to wait. The next session starts Feb. 19. Free information sessions are held 10 a.m. every Monday at Tassell M-TEC, 622 Godfrey Ave. SW. Registration is not required but is appreciated. If this is not convenient for you, call (616) 234-3800 to set up an appointment.
