Jan. 17, 2014 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Community College is adding Google Glass to its teaching resources.

GRCC's Distance Learning and Instructional Technologies Department has joined the Google Glass Explorer program and is field testing the head-mounted computer to see how its functions and apps can enhance teaching and learning.

“With Google Glass’ ability to capture images and video, our faculty could use it to create first-person tutorials,” said business professor Garret Brand, who was instrumental in bringing the device to GRCC. “With a variety of apps, it can translate voice and text, augment their environment and give them access to engaging content.”

Brand said Google Glass fits in with a crucial GRCC goal: providing faculty and students with access to emerging and innovative technology.

He said the department will test Google Glass with faculty and students in — and out of — the classroom. Its first appearance was at GRCC’s Faculty Learning Day on Jan. 9 at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. It also will be deployed in GRCC’s Steelcase LearnLab in the new Meijer Center for Business Studies.

“I’m excited to see how Glass can enhance teaching and learning at GRCC,” Brand said. “While it’s innovative technology, I’m certainly not the first to use it! Andrew Vanden Heuvel, a GRCC adjunct in our physical sciences department, was an early Glass Explorer.”

Vanden Heuvel wore the Google Glass device when he visited the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland last spring. You can see his video here.

Grand Rapids Community College, established in 1914, offers opportunities for more than 30,000 students annually in degree courses, certification and training programs, workshops and personal enrichment classes. GRCC holds classes on the downtown Grand Rapids campus as well as several locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
