GRCC adds cross country teams, hires coach

July 21, 2014 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Community College has hired a coach with more than 10 years of experience to lead its new cross country teams.

Matt Sicilia is a physical education teacher and middle school athletic director at Excel Charter Academy. He was a student coaching assistant at Calvin College for a year and then was an assistant coach for Calvin Christian High School’s cross country teams for 10 years.

“I’m excited to be part of building a championship-caliber program from the ground up,” he said. “My goals for these teams are simple: Create an environment where academics, team work and self-discipline come first. Ensure each student reaches their full potential. Lead both teams to NJCAA Division 2 nationals within the next two years.”

Athletic director Charlie Wells said GRCC is adding men’s and women’s cross country teams in response to student interest, availability of competition within the state, and reasonable program costs. The Michigan Community College Athletic Association conference has 12 men’s cross country teams and 11 women’s cross country teams for 2014-15.

With the cross country season starting in August, Sicilia is seeking quality runners immediately. Current and incoming GRCC students will find the cross country recruiting form here.

Grand Rapids Community College has been offering educational opportunities in West Michigan for 100 years. Established in 1914, the college offers degree courses, certification and training programs, and workshops and personal enrichment classes. Offerings are held on GRCC’s downtown Grand Rapids campus, as well as at several locations throughout Kent and Ottawa counties.
