Leah Nixon is director of communications at Grand Rapids Community College. Her career began in a newsroom after she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Central Michigan University. Looking to expand her career opportunities, Leah embarked on a new path in higher education marketing and public relations. She spent eight years working at Ferris State University handling everything from media relations and press release writing to managing a team of marketing professionals charged with strengthening the institution’s brand.
At GRCC, Leah directs a team that handles media and public relations, social media, advertising, graphics, and web-content development, in addition to supporting various special communications initiatives that arise.
Leah earned her Master of Business Administration from Ferris State. She believes education is the way to better your situation, and is involved in several philanthropic and volunteer activities, including community advocacy for a regional cancer center; serving as an executive board member of the Michigan American Council on Education, acting as chair of the MI-ACE Young Women, Strong Leaders Conference; and serving as president of the Michigan Community College Marketing and Communications Association. She was most recently recognized for her endeavors by being named one of the Grand Rapids Business Journal’s 2015 Class of 40 Under Forty.
