Walk October - (October 5 - 31, 2009)

This may be a blast from the past for some or totally new to others.
Walking is a simple form of exercising that can be done anytime or anyplace. Walking 10,000 steps a day is recommended (this is about 5 miles), but we don’t care how much you walk, just walk.
Sign up today.

Walk 50 miles and your name goes in a drawing for a $50 gift card from MC Sports, Meijer, or the Bookstore. In fact, for every 50 miles you walk, your name goes in the drawing.

Walk October is open to all GRCC faculty, staff, and student employees.
Walk before, during or after work --- here or at home.

Register at www.grcc.edu/currentlearning by Friday, October 1.

You will receive a Walk October mile tracking form via email.

For those of you already participating in the Move It or Lose It Program, you can record the time you spend walking on your Move It or Lose It tally sheet, too. Just a little extra incentive.

Wellness Challenge

The YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids is offering employees of West Michigan businesses and organizations the opportunity to participant in Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) which is a safe, accurate and non-invasive body composition assessment technique. This is a great way to learn about your body and where changes should/could be made.

Body composition is often a neglected component of fitness but is important in assisting one with a healthy lifestyle.

A healthy body weight is where you feel healthy and fit, has no eating disorders to maintain that weight and have healthy, functioning immune and reproductive systems. It is also a weight that you can realistically reach and maintain without heroic lifestyle efforts.

The equipment used will test your:
  • Extracellular Water/Intracellular Water and Total Body Water
  • BMI
  • Percent Body Fat and Total Body Fat
  • Skeletal Muscle Mass and Segmental Lean Muscle Distribution (Right/Left Legs and Arms, and Trunk)
  • Body Composition and Resting Metabolic Rate Assessment
Go to this link to see a sample report (pdf)

All this is done in 40 seconds. The Y is offering a special Corporate rate of $15 per person to GRCC employees for the first test. (Employees will receive their second testing at the end of the wellness challenge for $7.50. Two tests for $22.50). You will have a consultation with someone from the Y after each testing.

Appointments for your body composition analysis are scheduled with the Learning Academy. Payment for both testings must be made at the time of scheduling. The dates are Thursday, September 24 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. & Friday, September 25 from 7:30 a.m. to noon Checks should be made payable to YMCA. Confirming appointments will be sent with the location. Two people can be scheduled every 10 minutes.

The Wellness Challenge will run from September 24 to the week of January 18, 2010. The GRCC Employee Wellness Team will receive an aggregate report at the end of the challenge to see if we meet the goals set by the team for such things as total pounds of fat loss, % of fat loss, total pounds of weight loss, total pounds of lean muscle gained, and maybe even the increase of hydration (water). NO INDIVIDUAL RESULTS WILL BE SHARED WITH THE TEAM.
