Upward Bound

Upward Bound (UB) is a pre-college program for low-income and potential first-generation college students. Upward Bound scholars build academic skills that help in successfully pursuing post-secondary education. The program is free to program particpants.

Teachers, counselors, and social service agencies recommend eighth grade students that  will attend Grand Rapids Creston or Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills high schools. UB staff then selects students with academic potential that have a need for program services. More on how to apply

Benefits of Upward Bound

Upward Bound emphasizes developing skills in reading, writing, math, foreign language and science. The program gives high school students a chance to find out about college life. It helps develop skills necessary to succeed in college. Personal, career, and academic counseling are also provided.

During the regular academic school year, students meet with Upward Bound staff (teachers, counselors and tutors) through classes, home visits, counseling sessions, enrichment activities, and tutoring sessions. In daily Upward Bound classes, students receive academic, personal and career advising. Students can also participate in campus visits, seminars, conferences and workshops that will help prepare them for college acceptance and success.

During the summer, Upward Bound students live on the campus of a local college for six weeks and take academic classes at GRCC. While participating in the summer component, students are exposed to a variety of academic, social and cultural enrichment activities.

Upward Bound involves students' parents in many activities, including cultural events, seminars, financial aid workshops, and a Parental Advisory Board. Upward Bound assists parents in encouraging their children to be independent, critical, and positive thinkers and to strive for excellence in their academic, social, and cultural endeavors.
