GRCC Today is Now Online

GRCC Today is now published online at www.grcc.edu/grcctodayonline .  The Communications Department will continue to publish a daily email to all employees listing the latest stories, but there will no longer be a slide show attached. As GRCC transitions to an online-only version of our employee newsletter, there are some important differences you need to consider that will change how we exchange information.

New Features:

Faster: No longer will users have to download a large PowerPoint slideshow, making it easier for slower connections to access.

Search: All content will now be searchable. Trying to find that story from a week ago about payroll forms? No problem - use the search engine.

Live: No more deadlines. The Communications Department will continue to publish a daily email listing the latest news, but content can be published (and be edited) at any time.

“One-Stop Shopping”: You can get all of your information in one place. The new GRCC Today online has the college’s Twitter feed as well as links to the upcoming events in the www.grccevents.com  promotional calendar (so make sure you promote your event by submitting it at www.grccevents.com).

Comments: Have your say; the new format allows for discussion about news stories.

RSS: Short for “Really Simple Syndication,” it allows GRCC Today to be embedded in other web pages and applications (like Blackboard) and be published to news feed readers like Google Reader.

Changes:

Special Sections: The new format doesn't allow for special sections. However, it also means we have the ability to tag and categorize stories for easy retrieval later on.

Repeating Stories: The new format means stories will be available (and searchable) “forever,” eliminating the need to run them more than once.

Permalinks: Each submission will have its own unique address, so you can now go directly to that story (as well as easily give out the address in an email).

Open to the Public: GRCC Today will now be highly public, so don't submit anything you would not want out on the Internet (such as personal photos or information). In addition, take care to word submissions carefully: they will be viewed by a much more larger audience.

Plagiarism: It will be much more important to cite one's sources when using material attributable to another source. You will need the approval of the owners of images and other content in order for it to be published in GRCC Today.
